Even with local anesthesia, it is difficult sometimes to totally numb the patient so that he or she does not feel anything during a root canal. In certain instances, we must go into the tooth and numb the pulp directly only once we have accessed the pulp. Unfortunately, when a tooth has deteriorated enough, a little more discomfort is required to help the patient to be asymptomatic and pain-free.
