Dental Filling Materials
Comparing Dental Filling Materials and Available Options
What types of dental filling materials are available and are some safer than others? We compare your options in the following video by Mark Teach, one of our experienced Buffalo dentists. If you have questions, or would like to schedule a dental appointment, please contact us today.
Our office uses composite and amalgam fillings with our patients. A composite is a tooth-colored filling that usually contains a resin and a glass filler, which is composed of many microscopic glass particles. This type of filling has many different shades so that we can match the shade of the patient’s tooth. Amalgam, also known as a silver filling, is usually about half-silver and half-mercury. The metals are mixed and then bound together, and once the amalgam hardens, it becomes a suitable filling material. Other substances exist that can be effectively used in fillings, but our office relies on composite and amalgam, which are the most popular and durable options.
